Welcome to Elora Racquets and Fitness!

The Elora Racquets and Fitness Club is located between Fergus and Elora on county road 18 just north of the beautiful Grand river in Ontario, Canada. We are a key club featuring squash, tennis, exercise facilities, and a variety of other activities.

Elora Racquets and Fitness

History:

Australian John Andrews, architect of Scarborough College, introduced squash into Elora. By the late 1970's one hundred members were enjoying his excellent wooden hardball court designed and built in the stone row housing on Mill Street. When the building was sold, Bill and Sallie Smyth and Glen Kelly, determined to keep this exciting, challenging, and fun sport in the area, built Elora Racquets, which housed two international squash courts, two racquetball courts, universal gym, change rooms with saunas, lounge and kitchenette. In the fall of 1980, the new facility opened with 300 enthusiastic members.

For the next 17 years, the club flourished, becoming a second home to hundreds in the community. In May 1997, Jake Doering took over the responsibility of managing the club and tried to continue the family traditions that Bill and Sallie had so sucessfully developed. Sadly, on Oct. 5, 1997, Bill Smyth, the heart and soul of Elora Racquets for two decades, passed away.

Thanks to all our members, Bill's dream is alive and well:

  • 17 regional tennis titles
  • 14 regional squash titles
  • 5 players in the top 10 in official Ontario squash junior rankings
